About

Dr. Xiang Li is an Assistant Professor (TTAP) jointly appointed in the Department of Animal Science and the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. His research program focuses on Precision Animal Health, integrating molecular diagnostics, microbiome science, and bioinformatics to improve food safety and animal production.

Dr. Li's work spans quantitative PCR assay development, next-generation sequencing, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, and Salmonella ecology in livestock systems. He collaborates closely with federal agencies including the USDA and EPA, and with industry partners across the poultry sectors.

Research

Pathogen Diagnostics

Development and validation of duplex quantitative PCR assays for rapid, sensitive detection and quantification of foodborne pathogens in animal production environments.

Microbiome Science

16S rRNA and shotgun metagenomic profiling of gut and environmental microbiomes in animals to understand health and production outcomes.

Bioinformatics

Pipeline development for high-throughput sequencing data analysis, including metagenomics, resistome characterization, and differential abundance analysis.

Salmonella Ecology

Ecology, persistence, and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella in broiler and layer production systems from farm to processing.

Antimicrobial Resistance

Surveillance and characterization of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock environments and their potential transfer to human pathogens.

Food Safety

Integrated approaches to reduce pathogen load and antimicrobial resistance in the food supply chain, from pre-harvest to post-harvest.
